What is the structure of a typical special investigation?
A typical special investigation begins with an initial preparatory and planning stage, designed to define the goals of the investigation and to determine the methods of investigation that will be employed. The next phase involves fact gathering, followed by interviews of individuals believed to be involved. Next, BCI will assist, as needed, with the disbursement of disciplinary and corrective action, and with ongoing prevention and education measures to help organizations remain healthy.
Do my employees have to know that you're conducting an investigation?
BCI strives to deploy the least disruptive investigative process possible. BCI's investigations are discreet, and employees who are not interviewed are typically unaware of BCI's presence. BCI may also conduct interviews off site or after hours to accommodate discretionary needs. Furthermore, BCI can assist a client in properly communicating the presence or results of an investigation to employees, media outlets, or law enforcement agencies.
What types of company information and documentation will I need to provide you at the beginning of the project?
BCI will likely request materials such as company policies and procedures, employee personnel files, as well as any information that has already been gathered prior to the investigation.
What are the qualifications and characteristics of your consultants?
BCI's Investigative Team consists of a multidisciplinary staff, pooling the expertise from such fields as employment law, forensic psychology, law enforcement, and information technology.
How will the results of the investigation be delivered to me?
At the request of the client BCI will produce a thorough, confidential written report detailing the entirety of the investigation.
What is the length of the typical investigation?
The size of the problem, the number of employees involved and client availability typically drive the length of the process. Although the lengths of our investigations vary, successful investigations usually take at least two weeks.
Is the interview phase of the investigation necessary, and what typically is the result?
The interview portion of the investigation is an integral component of most projects and their success. Employee interviews usually produce 80-90% of the total volume of information gleaned during the investigation. We are successful in obtaining both written and oral admissions from over 90% of those we interview.
What will be the total cost for the project?
Until some of the details surrounding the nature and scope of the problem are apparent, and the methods of investigation that BCI will deploy are decided upon, the total investment of an investigation is difficult to determine. BCI investigations operate within mutually agreed upon budget parameters. Regardless, BCI will engineer its process to ensure the maximum return on investment.
How are the police involved and is prosecution necessary?
Prosecution is an option that should be decided by both Client and outside counsel.
Are workplace investigations dangerous?
Some investigations can be dangerous. However, at the first indication of danger or a potentially violent situation we will make recommendations regarding the appropriate precautions. No one has ever been hurt or injured during one of our investigations.
